The History Center of San Luis Obispo County is set to open its newest exhibit Friday, May 3. The collection, on display for a year, will be open to the public at the Carnegie Library Museum, 696 Monterey St. in San Luis Obispo.Native Baskets: The Spirit That Binds, will feature locally-collected baskets made by Native American artisans. The goal of the exhibit is to shed light on the importance of the basket’s ancient past and bring it full circle into their significance today.The Painted Rock National Monument at the Carrizo Plains is a complementary theme as a symbol of unity for Central California Native Americans from before the Spanish conquest to the present.Throughout the collection viewers will see highlights of the function, form and natural fibers of over 40 unique baskets. This exhibit promises to offer visitors a fascinating experience.The History Center will formally unveil the exhibit at a special opening reception on Friday, May 3 at 5 p.m., offering guests a first look at the collection. Museum docents will be on-hand to answer questions and enrich the experience.
